Biography

AN IRRESISTIBLE CHARM

A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Basel School of Art and Design (Kunstgewerbeschule, Switzerland), Frédéric Blaimont lives and works in the Landes region of southwestern France.

His work has been recognised by Miroir de l’art and the British magazine Aesthetica, which have both named him among the 100 contemporary artists of the future.
In 2017, Frédéric Blaimont was awarded the Renée Bernard Grand Prize by the Fondation Taylor, as well as the Grand Prize of the Artistes Méridionaux. In 2015, he was nominated for the Luxembourg Art Prize.

Make visible the invisible

After spending many years stripping my figures of their surroundings, I gradually developed a freer approach and a more contemporary visual language. My painting remains narrative, but frees itself from convention.

The beach, the street, people, life itself are my raw material. I do not really choose my subjects: they impose themselves upon me. A look, an attitude, a posture, a way of being in the world can be enough to catch my attention and move me.

I seek to make visible the invisible in these ordinary people, whose very ordinariness makes them universal.Through them, it is ourselves that I observe. I try to say as little as possible, in order to say as much as possible: emotion.

Colours, plain backgrounds, figures that are sometimes drawn and sometimes painted, plays of light and staging are all ways of suggesting rather than describing. For however faithful a representation may be, it only becomes painting through interpretation.

I feel a kinship with Duane Hanson, an observer of his contemporaries; with Jacques Tati and his tender, amused view of the world; and with Martin Parr, whose work likewise reveals a particular attentiveness to ordinary people.

I began painting in oils at the age of twelve. After obtaining a vocational qualification in decorative painting, I entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1966, and later continued my studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, an institution deeply influenced by the spirit of the Bauhaus.
